The Ultimate Guide to the
fx-991ZA PLUS II
A comprehensive, deeply technical manual for South African High School students using the web-based fx-991ZA PLUS II (NATURAL-V.P.A.M.) Emulator for CAPS and IEB Mathematics.
1. Reading the LCD Display
Before executing complex algorithms, it's vital to read the calculator's status indicators. The EduCalc ZA emulator accurately reproduces the digital LCD array of the Casio fx-991ZA.
| Indicator | Meaning & State |
|---|---|
| S | The keypad is SHIFTED. Secondary functions (printed in yellow above keys) are primed. To cancel, press SHIFT again. |
| A | The ALPHA mode is active. Tertiary functions (red letters A-F, X, Y, M) are primed. To cancel, press ALPHA again. |
| M | A value is currently stored in Independent Memory (M+ / M-). |
| STO | Awaiting variable assignment. Triggered by SHIFT + RCL. Press a letter to store the displayed value. |
| RCL | Awaiting memory recall. Pressing a letter will recall its value to the display. |
| STAT / MAT | Statistics or Matrix calculation engines are currently booted. |
| D / R / G | Angle Unit Configuration: Degrees (D), Radians (R), or Gradians (G). |
2. The System Modes (MODE)
Pressing the MODE button triggers the main menu. Press the corresponding number on the keypad to activate a specific computation engine.
1 COMP (Computation)
The primary engine for standard arithmetic, trigonometry, logs, and roots. Native Calculus and Algebraic Solver execute exclusively in this mode.
2 CMPLX (Complex)
Engineered for imaginary unit math. In this mode, pressing ENG inputs the complex i. Supports absolute values and argument conversions natively.
3 STAT (Statistics)
Handles 1-VAR statistical analysis. Input your data points by typing the number and pressing M+, then press SHIFT + 1 to compute Mean, Variance, and StdDev.
4 BASE-N
Computer Science logic. Converts between Decimal (DEC), Hexadecimal (HEX), Binary (BIN), and Octal (OCT) using the designated function keys.
3. Advanced Algebraic Solver (SOLVE)
Our emulator includes a powerful numerical Newton-Raphson engine to solve for X in any generic equation.
// Example: Solve 5X + 3 = 18
1. Enter COMP mode.
2. Type 5, then press ALPHA + ) for X.
3. Type + 3.
4. Insert the equals sign by pressing ALPHA + CALC (gives =).
5. Type 18.
6. Finally, press SHIFT + CALC to run the SOLVE command.
> Result: X = 3
4. Native Calculus (Integration & Summations)
Unlike older generation web emulators, EduCalc ZA does not rely on slow external APIs for calculus. It utilizes a highly optimized, local numerical integration algorithm (Simpson's 1/3 Rule), central difference differentiation, and iterative summation loops to compute results instantly in your browser.
// Example: Definite Integral of x² from 0 to 5
1. Ensure you are in COMP mode.
2. Press ∫dx
3. Syntax required: ∫(Expression, Lower, Upper)
4. Input expression: ALPHA + ) to type X. Press x².
5. Type a comma using SHIFT + ).
6. Type 0, comma, 5, then close bracket ).
7. Press =.
> Result: 41.66666667
5. The Statistics Engine (STAT)
Our native JavaScript engine allows for rapid 1-VAR statistical computation without switching screens continuously.
Calculating Mean & Standard Deviation:
- Press MODE then 3 to enter STAT Mode.
- To input data, type your first number (e.g., 15) and press M+. The LCD will confirm `Data [n=1]`.
- Repeat for all your data points. The engine will track your total `n` natively.
- Press AC to clear the screen (your data remains safely in the engine memory).
- Press SHIFT then 1 to open the STAT computational menu.
- Choose 2 for Mean (x̄), 3 for Pop. StdDev (σx), or 1 for Sum (Σx).
6. The Equation Solver Menu (EQN)
To solve trinomials (quadratics) rapidly, you extract the `a`, `b`, and `c` constants from your standard form equation `aX² + bX + c = 0`.
- Press MODE then 5 to open the EQN menu.
- Press 3 to select the Quadratic solver aX² + bX + c = 0.
- The LCD will prompt you for `a?`. Type the value and press =.
- Repeat for `b?` and `c?`.
- The engine will natively calculate and output `X1` and `X2`. If the roots are imaginary, it will append an `i` automatically based on the discriminant!
7. 40 Scientific Constants (IEB & CAPS)
To avoid critical round-off errors in your Physical Sciences Paper 1 and 2 exams, use the built-in constants. Press SHIFT then 7 (CONST), followed by the 2-digit code below.
| Code | Constant | Symbol | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Proton mass | mp | 1.6726219e-27 |
| 03 | Electron mass | me | 9.10938356e-31 |
| 06 | Planck constant | h | 6.62607004e-34 |
| 23 | Elementary charge | e | 1.60217662e-19 |
| 24 | Avogadro constant | NA | 6.02214085e23 |
